Sort order. This was a fun, fast read, and one I recommend if you want something light and humorous. Wallace does what too many writers fail to do: he writes humor well. Some of his one-liners are priceless because they're so spot-on. I withheld the fifth star because, even after finishing the book, I don't know why the opening pages are there. They might be a spoof on nonfiction books that place the tensest chapter first in order to snag readers, and then begin at a time well in advance of that climax, but it's a technique I don't care for in nonfiction and in Tortugas Rising, the technique doesn't work here, either. In fact, sadly, its placement might discourage potential readers as the writing isn't as finely crafted as the prose in the main body of the work.
This is the first I've read by the author and I have to say I loved it. It had my heart pounding with anticipation, whilst also making me laugh.
I really enjoyed the fact that the two main characters are just two average men that you could quite easily pass on the street. The pace throughout the book is extremely fast, and there is so much different stuff going on it is completely impossible to be bored by this.
In my opinion it's a must read, it really is well worth the time. May 02, Martin Pingree rated it it was amazing.

This turned out to be an excellent read but it was very slow for the first part of the book. A good story with good characters and I did enjoy this modern day conspiracy.

Jun 25, Norma rated it it was amazing Shelves: , action , audio , character-led , comedy , reviewed , thriller. Format : Audiobook "Damn it, it's just so shiny. The unlikely heroes are two close friends, one of whom had unexpectedly, and reluctantly, inherited millions from a father he'd never met, the other the man determined to spend it for him. Closer to each other than brothers, the dialogue between them is fast and often funny, and this attitude extends to action, also.
An opening chapter sets the scene for excitements and violence to come amidst the lush vegetation of the designer islands but is really unecessary, especially as it is later never explained. What follows after is far more relevant: the introduction of the main players, human and location, before the adventure itself begins. It is a fast and colourful comedic read. Narration by Phil Thron compliments this all perfectly, individuals seperately voiced, reading speed geared to the action pacing and a warm presentation which adds to the smiles of the comedic banter. I have only recently discovered author Benjamin Wallace so was delighted when, at my request, the rights holder of Tortuga Rising freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom.
Thank you. I truly loved this fast, funny story. More, please. Sep 15, Drew rated it really liked it Shelves: beach-mysteries , borrowed-kindle-or-audible , thrillers. The characters are fun and interesting if a bit static but they are great to get to know. It was tons of fun. Mar 26, Janet rated it really liked it. Apr 30, Dave Martin rated it really liked it. See how Garden Key, Bush Key, and Long Key shown from left to right in the photo slider below have changed in ten years. As the climate warms and sea level rises, many sandy beaches and islands are getting smaller—and could even disappear.
Yet these keys are important habitat for nesting seabirds and sea turtles. About 80, sooty terns nest on Bush Key. Bush Key is only about two feet above sea level, and rising seas coupled with wave action are eroding the island. They nest on beaches.

But sea level rise is impacting the Dry Tortugas and reducing the nesting grounds of these seabirds. Swipe to see some of the seabirds that are at risk.
We asked what the price would be and estimated how much we needed. When they came back with the fuel the price was higher! Very frustrating as they are the only game in town. Also decided that this would be a good spot to test the watermaker and get it working. So, after 2 days of adjusting this and that, we made our first batch of water! Now we are even more self-sufficient! We explored the town of Bahia de Tortuga a couple times. We walked on the few paved streets as well as the dirt roads.

We found a little market and were able to pick up eggs, a little fruit and a few veggies. Unfortunately, the cantina was closed, although cruisers were hanging out there and using internet. They have sailed down from the San Francisco area! We had good wind and the swell was a little bigger than expected, so I, Laura began the evening freaked out. But, after a while I was able to adjust and enjoy the beautiful evening with the full moon.
It was so bright we could see land 10 miles away. It feels much safer to me, when you can see around you. The wind quieted down during the night and the afternoon. We motored for a while in the night, even though we are trying to sail as much as possible, to make the cruising kitty last longer. The water is an Indigo blue, very different from the green we saw North of here. The swells have been between 4 and 6 feet. The winds max 15 knots.
With the lighter winds we finally pulled out our Spindrifter light wind Spinnaker sail.
